Miami E-Prix Race Preview: Everything you need to know about Formula E’s debut at the Miami International Autodrome

The Miami International Autodrome makes its long-awaited debut on the Formula E calendar this weekend, hosting Round 3 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship and marking another milestone for the all-electric series.

Envision Racing arrive in Florida for the third instalment of the season, with Sébastien Buemi and Joel Eriksson set to tackle the exciting new venue that wraps its way around the iconic Hard Rock Stadium. It will be the first time Formula E has raced competitively at the Miami International Autodrome, adding an extra layer of unpredictability to the weekend.

Momentum is firmly on Envision Racing’s side following a strong showing last time out in Mexico City, where Buemi secured pole position and demonstrated the outright pace of the package. While a difficult race ultimately meant the team left Mexico without the points their performance deserved, the front-row start has injected confidence heading into Miami. With lessons learned and redemption firmly on the agenda, Envision Racing will be looking to convert speed into results under the Florida sun.

The week is set to be busy, opening with a rookie test, in which Zak O’Sullivan will get behind the wheel for Envision Racing once again, following two successful tests last season in Jeddah and Berlin.

THE CIRCUIT

The Miami International Autodrome skirts the perimeter of the Hard Rock Stadium, offering a spectacular backdrop as drivers charge around the 2.32km, 14-turn, state-of-the-art circuit. Combining long straights with technical sections, the layout is designed to test efficiency, racecraft, and energy management – key ingredients for success in Formula E.

Although Miami has appeared on the Formula E calendar in previous seasons, visiting this circuit for the first time presents a brand-new challenge for teams and drivers alike. With no race data to rely on, adaptability will be crucial as the field works to unlock performance across the weekend.

Lined with palm trees to deliver a true Florida atmosphere, the circuit blends purpose-built permanent asphalt with sections that flow through the stadium’s surrounding infrastructure.

LAST TIME OUT

While an official Formula E race has yet to be held at the Miami International Autodrome, the venue has already played host to a landmark event for the series. Last year, Formula E staged its inaugural Evo Sessions at the circuit.

Among the standout creators was Envision Racing’s talent for the event, as actor Tom Felton – best known for his role in the Harry Potter films – joined the team as part of the experience. Coached by Buemi, Felton fully immersed himself in life as a racing driver, visiting Envision Racing’s Silverstone factory to have his seat fitted and spending time on the simulator in preparation.

Sharing the track with other high-profile names such as Brooklyn Beckham and Sergio Agüero, Felton took to the Miami circuit in the GEN3 Evo, experiencing first-hand the performance and intensity of Formula E machinery. While the Evo Sessions were non-competitive, they provided valuable insight into the demands of the circuit.

HEAR FROM OUR DRIVERS

Sebastien Buemi said: “After an amazing qualifying in Mexico, I’m feeling very motivated heading into Miami to deliver a good result in the race for the team. The pace in the car was great last time out, and we’ll be working hard to keep that momentum up. Miami is a really cool city to be racing in, and I’m looking forward to getting out on track.”

Joel Eriksson said: “Miami will level the playing field, with it being a new circuit for all drivers, which should hopefully help me. Mexico had highs and lows, but we have been working hard ahead of this race to keep learning and improving each race.”
