Before we started restoration projects around the world, our very first Sustainable Chain started in Madagascar.
An area decimated by deforestation for timber and charcoal production, mangroves provide a restoration of habitats and a natural barrier against climate change threats that Madagascar is particularly vulnerable to.
Our fans, by making a pledge on our website, planted a quarter of a million trees in the region. Not only that, they took hundreds of thousands of CO2/kg out of the atmosphere through their own small, daily actions.

WHY MANGROVES MATTER
Mangroves are salt-tolerant coastal forests found in tropical and subtropical regions. They thrive where few other plants can survive – in tidal mudflats, estuaries, and saline soils. But they are far more than coastal trees:
- Store 3–4x more carbon per hectare than tropical rainforests
- Protect communities from cyclones, erosion, and rising seas
- Provide nursery grounds for fish and marine life
Globally, mangroves cover 14–15 million hectares across 123 countries – and up to 35% have been lost since 1980 due to development, aquaculture, pollution, and climate change.

Restoring mangroves in Madagascar delivers measurable environmental and social impact:
Among the world’s most effective natural carbon sinks, mangroves capture and store significant carbon. They restore habitats that support marine nurseries and endangered species.
Mangroves reduce storm surges, stabilise coastlines, and protect vulnerable embankments, and they help to regulate salinity and safeguard freshwater systems.
From a community perspective, this supports local livelihoods, with women playing a key role in nursery management, planting, and long-term ecosystem stewardship.

Community and Livelihood Impact
Mangrove restoration is more than environmental action – it strengthens local economies and community resilience. The programme creates jobs in nursery management, planting, and ecosystem stewardship, offering safer alternatives to high-risk forest work exposed to wildlife and tidal hazards.
It also prioritises women’s employment, providing income, skills, and leadership opportunities. By strengthening household incomes, the programme helps families keep children in school, reducing pressure for child labour and supporting better education outcomes for the next generation.
