RAW Charging partners with Envision Racing to power team operations with fast destination charging at Silverstone, UK

Envision Racing are announcing a new partnership with RAW Charging, the leading electric vehicle (EV) chargepoint operator for the hospitality, leisure and retail sectors.

As part of the collaboration, RAW has installed three dual-port 22kW fast chargers at Envision Racing’s Silverstone headquarters, enabling six cars to charge simultaneously powering the team’s operations while showcasing RAW’s rapidly growing national network to EV drivers.

The 22kW chargers are designed with the end user in mind, enabling the Envision Racing team to charge simply and efficiently within a typical workday.

RAW’s business is built around destination charging, providing reliable charging at places where drivers naturally spend time, such as hotels, retail centres and leisure attractions. The model benefits both drivers, who recharge while they shop or relax – and venues, which see increased footfall and longer dwell times.

RAW’s network includes charging installations at major destinations such as:

Eros Innovation and Envision Racing sign strategic Memorandum of Understanding

Envision Racing and Eros Innovation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in Monaco, setting out a potential strategic collaboration across the intersection of culture, sustainability, AI, and performance technology.

The MOU brings together two organisations whose ambitions extend far beyond their traditional sectors. It combines Envision Racing’s expertise in high-performance electric motorsport and sustainable innovation with Eros Innovation’s cultural models, proprietary AI infrastructure, and next-generation data systems.

Under the MOU, the companies will explore opportunities to apply technologies and insights developed in elite electric motorsport to Eros Innovation’s cultural and entertainment focussed AI models. The collaboration will also explore how to drive outcomes through Envision Racing’s relationships with Envision Energy India and EARTHDAY.ORG that supports sustainable community development in the Sundarbans region in India.

Both organisations share a commitment to purpose-driven innovation, using technology, data and creativity to accelerate progress across electrification, sustainability and cultural integrity. Envision Racing commits to 8 million tonnes of CO₂ avoided through world’s largest fan-led climate pledge programme

Formula E team targets 8 million tonnes of CO₂e avoided through direct fan action, alongside its 500,000-mangrove restoration commitment in the Indian Sundarbans region

SHANGHAI, 2nd July 2026: Envision Racing today announced its most ambitious sustainability commitment to date: a target to avoid 8 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent through its Sustainable Chain fan pledge programme. This announcement was made during a demonstration from Envision driver Sébastien Buemi on the streets of Shanghai ahead of the FIA ABB Formula E World Championship Shanghai E-Prix.

The new target builds on Envision Racing’s long-standing commitment to using motorsport as a platform for positive environmental action. Through Sustainable Chain, the team encourages fans around the world to take practical climate actions in their everyday lives, demonstrating how individual actions can create meaningful collective impact.

Since launching the initiative, more than 270,000 people have already joined the Sustainable Chain, creating one of the largest fan-led climate engagement programmes in global sport.

Reducing emissions and restoring nature

The commitment follows Envision Racing’s two-part approach to climate action:

  • Reduce: Help avoid 8 million tonnes of CO₂e through fan pledges
  • Restore: Support the removal of approximately 250,000 tonnes of CO₂e through investment in large-scale mangrove restoration projects

Fans can choose from a range of practical climate pledges, from reducing household waste and recycling more to choosing lower-carbon transport options, improving home energy efficiency or switching to an electric vehicle. Every pledge contributes to a growing global movement while helping support ecosystem restoration projects in communities most affected by climate change.

The target of 8 million tonnes of CO₂e is equivalent to approximately 4.4 million long-haul return flights and represents around 0.02% of annual global carbon emissions – an unprecedented level of impact for a fan-led climate action campaign.

Supporting communities on the frontline of climate change

Earlier this year, Envision Racing announced a major restoration project alongside Envision Energy India and EARTHDAY.ORG to help restore degraded areas of the Sundarbans Mangrove Forest in West Bengal, India.

The five-year programme will support the planting of more than 500,000 mangrove trees, expected to remove approximately 154,000 tonnes of CO₂e, while delivering wider social benefits including improved health, nutrition, sanitation and education programmes for local communities. The initiative is expected to benefit more than 18,000 women and 10,000 families living on the frontline of climate change.

The project builds on Envision Racing’s wider restoration efforts through Sustainable Chain, which has already supported the planting of more than 270,000 mangrove trees in Madagascar.

Envision Racing at London Climate Action Week

London Climate Action Week 2026 arrived with an unscripted and sobering backdrop. As delegates, innovators, and policymakers gathered across the capital to discuss the future of the clean energy transition, the UK was simultaneously experiencing its most intense June heatwave on record.

Temperatures reached a provisional 36.1°C, breaking a record that had stood since 1976. The Met Office issued a Red Extreme Heat Warning. Earlier in the week, over 400 fire engines were called out across London responding to flash flooding.

The climate emergency was not just a theme of the week. It was actually happening in real time.

Against that backdrop, Envision Racing was at the heart of two of the week’s most significant events: the Global Renewables Alliance at Mansion House, and Reset Connect at ExCel London.

Both gatherings reinforced the same truth – the tools to respond to the crisis we are already living through exist, are increasingly affordable, and are proven. What is needed now is the will, the infrastructure, and the speed.

Mansion House and the Global Renewables Alliance

On Tuesday, Envision Racing joined the Global Renewables Alliance at Mansion House, where our race car was positioned outside the venue as UK Minister for Energy Security and Net Zero Ed Miliband and UN Secretary-General António Guterres addressed delegates inside. The juxtaposition was fitting: a machine representing the cutting edge of electric performance, parked outside a building where world leaders were making the case for a global clean energy age.

Both speakers anchored their remarks in a shared conviction: the transition is already underway, and the economics are settled. Miliband pointed to £100 billion in private green energy investment committed in the UK alone, and $2.2 trillion invested globally in clean energy this year. Guterres reinforced the multilateral case – that global electrification and falling renewable costs benefit everyone, and that international solidarity is both a moral and a practical imperative.

The statistics the speakers shared painted a very clear picture. Renewables are now the cheapest, fastest, and most scalable source of new energy on the planet. Clean energy investment has doubled fossil fuel investment. Energy storage is set to exceed $100 billion in 2026. And yet fossil fuels still account for roughly 80% of global energy use, with three quarters of the world dependent on imported supplies at prices beyond their control. As temperatures outside broke June records not seen in nearly 50 years, the gap between what is possible and what is deployed was apparent.

The call from the stage was not just for ambition but for the infrastructure to match it – grids, storage systems, and 21st-century energy networks capable of delivering on the full promise of renewables. Particular urgency was placed on investment equity: Africa holds 60% of the world’s solar resources but receives just 2% of global green energy investment. The energy transition, to be meaningful, must be a global one.

Reset Connect

On Thursday, Envision Racing brought our two-seater car to Reset Connect at ExCel London, where our Managing Director and CTO Sylvain Filippi joined a panel on the future of electric mobility, moderated by Dominic Phinn, Head of Transport at the Climate Group. He was joined by Abby Chicken, Head of Sustainability at Openreach; Oliver Boots, Chief Commercial Officer at Octopus Electric Vehicles; and Neil Whittaker, Associate at Eigen Ventures.

Sylvain opened with the arc of Formula E itself – a story that mirrors the broader EV revolution. When the series launched in 2014, cars ran for just 25 minutes before drivers had to swap vehicles. By Gen2, a single car could complete the full race. Gen3 brought the weight and pace of a Formula 1 car, battery included. The Gen4 car, which Envision Racing begins testing imminently, reaches 335kph, does 0–60 in 1.8 seconds, produces 600kW of power and 700kW of regeneration, and operates at 97% efficiency. That standard is already shaping road car development; the 800-volt platforms now common in premium EVs were directly inspired by Formula E.

The panel reflected on a real-world adoption story that has quietly surpassed many expectations. Oliver Boots described Octopus Electric Vehicles growing to a position where the company now accounts for 7% of all new UK EV registrations. Running costs of 2–3 pence per mile, and the fact that 93% of their customers say they would never return to a combustion engine, speak to something beyond environmental conviction. Electric vehicles, in the experience of the people driving them, are simply better.

Abby Chicken offered a complementary perspective from fleet operations. Openreach, committed to zero emissions by March 2031, has found that the most effective internal case for EVs is a product one – better vehicles, lower running costs, a nicer driving experience – rather than a carbon obligation. That reframing, from duty to preference, is increasingly how large-scale fleet transition happens in practice, and it echoes what Envision Racing has always believed: that demonstrating performance is the most powerful argument for electric technology.

Neil Whittaker raised the systemic challenges that remain: 70% of UK households lack access to off-road parking; public charging confidence outside urban centres remains fragile; and grid investment will be essential as vehicle-to-grid technology – already live with Octopus, BYD, and a growing pipeline of OEM partners – moves from pilot to mainstream. The data opportunity is significant too, with carbon-intensity-optimised charging just one example of the innovation still to be unlocked.

Racing in the right direction

Envision Racing left London Climate Action Week with a renewed sense of both the urgency and the opportunity. The record-breaking heat that framed the week was not just a backdrop, it was a lived experience for millions of people across the UK, and a signal that the timeline for action is not theoretical. But the conversations at Mansion House and ExCel were a reminder that the solutions are not theoretical either. They are here, they are working, and they are improving fast.

From a car pushing the boundaries of what electric performance can achieve, to fleet managers switching because the vehicles are better, to policymakers committing billions to the infrastructure the transition requires – the direction is clear. The work now is to move faster.

 

VivaTech: A glimpse into the future of technology and sustainable innovation

Few events capture the pace of technological progress quite like VivaTech.

Walking the exhibition floor felt like stepping into the future.

Whether you were shaking hands with a robot or seeing the incredible potential of AI, everywhere you looked, companies were presenting bold ideas aimed at solving some of the world’s biggest challenges, whether in energy, mobility, climate action or industrial efficiency. It was exactly the kind of environment where a company like Envision belongs.

The speaker programme reflected the scale and influence of the event. From Jeff Bezos and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi to other leaders representing many of the world’s largest technology companies, the discussions focused on the opportunities and responsibilities that come with shaping the future. Topics ranged from artificial intelligence and energy transition to entrepreneurship and global collaboration, reinforcing the sense that technological innovation will play a defining role in addressing the challenges of the decades ahead.

Beyond the technology itself, one of the most interesting themes throughout the event was the growing importance of partnerships. Many of the world’s leading technology companies are increasingly turning to sport as a platform to showcase innovation, connect products to real-world applications and engage audiences in a meaningful way. Whether through sponsorships, activations or collaborative projects, sport continues to provide a powerful stage for technology companies looking to tell their story.

For Envision Racing, these conversations resonate strongly with our own mission. Envision Racing joins forces with Hainan Blue Ribbon for Beach Clean-Up Initiative in Sanya

Envision Racing returns to Sanya for Round 11 of the Season 12 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, where they have partnered with a local marine conservation NGO as the latest activation in the team’s Race Against Climate Change initiative. The collaboration centred around a beach clean-up event held at Haitang Square, Haitang District, Sanya.

Co-organised by Envision Racing – the Season 9 Formula E Champions – and Hainan Blue Ribbon Marine Environmental Protection Association, a local marine conservation NGO, the event brought together Envision Racing drivers Sébastien Buemi and Joel Eriksson, simulator driver Zak O’Sullivan, student volunteers from Sanya Foreign Language Academy, and Blue Ribbon volunteers.

Through the beach clean-up, followed by meaningful educational and plastic recycling workshops, participants turned environmental commitment into tangible action, spreading the message Race Against Climate Change (RACC) at another Formula E destination.

From Shoreline to Craftsmanship: The “Regenerative Narrative” of Plastics

On the morning of 18 June, the initiative kicked off on Haitang Square Beach. Envision Racing drivers and youth volunteers split into groups to collect plastic bottles, bags, foam fragments and discarded fishing nets from the shoreline, with all waste weighed and recorded. On-site waste-sorting tutorials were conducted, with staff breaking down typical beach litter to highlight the proportion of plastic in coastal debris and explain its harmful effects on marine life and ecosystems. These practical sessions deepened participants’ understanding of plastic bans and low-carbon living.

A whale and dolphin rescue lecture added further depth to the programme. Local rescue experts introduced the cetacean species commonly found in Sanya’s waters, the causes of strandings, and scientific rescue methods, complete with live demonstrations of basic first aid, emergency response and shore-based assistance. Drivers and student volunteers took part in simulated rescue drills, gaining first-hand insight into the dangers plastic waste poses to marine life.

A plastic recycling workshop, themed “Turning Waste into Treasure,” offered two hands-on activities. At the recycled plastic badge-making station, participants used plastic offcuts and food-grade plastic pellets collected from the clean-up to create exclusive Envision Racing Sanya eco-keyrings, experiencing the value of resource circularity first-hand.

Meanwhile, students from Sanya Foreign Language Academy repurposed their own used plastic bottles into plant pots, pen holders and creative ornaments through cutting, painting and assembling. These enriching activities gave drivers and youngsters a clear appreciation of the transformative potential of waste materials, reinforcing green, low-carbon values and the rejection of wasteful consumption.

Art from Waste: A Recycling Marvel from the Beach to COP26

Envision Racing also showcased its globally recognised sustainability project – the “Recover E” plastic waste art car. In collaboration with a leading UK artist, the team spent 700 hours handcrafting a full-scale, 1:1 replica Formula E car using 100 kilograms of beach plastic waste collected by schoolchildren in Glasgow.

This unique “Recover E” travelled all the way to the world leaders’ summit at COP26, where it drew the attention of heads of state and international media, sending a powerful global message on the urgency of tackling plastic pollution. Last year, the art car – a symbol of the circular economy – was also exhibited at the World Design Cities Conference (WDCC) in Shanghai, showcasing the boundless potential of design and regeneration along the Huangpu River.

Han Yu, Vice President of Hainan Blue Ribbon Marine Environmental Protection Association, said: “The ocean is our blue homeland, but plastic pollution is eroding its health. Safeguarding our coastlines is a shared responsibility. By joining forces with Envision Racing, we aim not only to remove coastal debris and improve the marine ecosystem but also to leverage the team’s positive influence to engage the public – especially young people – in the fight against ocean plastic and to instil sound environmental values. Young people are the vanguard of environmental protection. We hope they will integrate marine conservation into their daily lives, reduce plastic use, inspire those around them, and together protect this vast blue expanse.”

继2019年三亚站之后,世界电动方程式锦标赛时隔七年重回三亚。比赛前夕,在碧海蓝天的映衬下,一场名为“绿动海岸·零碳守护”的净滩公益行动在三亚市海棠区海棠广场举行。此次活动由电动方程式第九赛季冠军车队远景车队携手海南本土海洋保护公益组织——海南省蓝丝带海洋环境保护协会共同发起。远景车队车手Sébastien Buemi、Joel Eriksson、车队模拟器车手Zak O’Sullivan、三亚外国语学院的初高中学生志愿者以及蓝丝带海洋环境保护协会的志愿者们,通过海滩净滩、鲸豚救护科普讲座、塑料再生手工坊等丰富多样的形式,以实际行动践行护海使命,传播零碳减塑理念。

从海滩净滩到指尖创意:塑料的“再生叙事”

6月18日上午,公益行动在海棠广场海滩拉开序幕,远景车队车手与青少年志愿者们分组清理塑料瓶、塑料袋、泡沫碎块,以及被遗弃的渔网等海滩塑料垃圾,并完成称重与数据统计工作。现场同步开展垃圾分类实操教学,工作人员对海滩边典型垃圾进行细致讲解,直观展示塑料制品在海岸垃圾中的占比,剖析塑料污染对海洋生物和生态环境的危害,普及海滩垃圾分类知识,让志愿者们在亲身实践中加深对“禁塑”和低碳生活的理解。

随后,一场鲸豚救护科普讲座为活动注入了更深层的意义。本地救助专家围绕三亚海域常见鲸豚种类、搁浅诱因及科学救助方法展开讲解,并现场演示了鲸豚基础救护、应急防护及岸边辅助救援等实操流程。远景车队车手与学生志愿者共同参与模拟救护演练,在互动中深刻认识塑料垃圾对海洋生物的危害。

活动现场设置了塑料再生手工坊环节,以“变废为宝”为主题,包含两项手作体验。在可回收塑料压模环保挂件制作区,参与者使用净滩收集的塑料废料及食品级塑料颗粒,制作远景车队三亚专属环保挂件,切身感受资源循环利用的价值。另一边,三亚外国语学院的学生用自带废旧塑料瓶,通过裁剪、涂色、拼接等方式,改造成花盆、笔筒、创意摆件等作品。丰富的手作体验让车手与青少年深刻体会到废旧物资的再生魅力,强化了绿色低碳、拒绝浪费的环保意识。

与此同时,活动全程设置海洋科普展,内容涉及海洋塑料污染实拍画面、海洋生物被垃圾伤害的真实故事以及海洋保护行动与禁塑相关知识。

“塑”造艺术:从海滩到联合国气候变化大会的循环奇迹

活动现场,远景车队分享了其享誉全球的可持续发展案例——“远景车队塑料垃圾艺术车”(Recover E)。车队携手英国知名装置艺术家,耗费700小时,以格拉斯哥当地小学生收集到的100公斤海滩塑料垃圾为原材料,采用纯手工的方式,打造了一台1:1真实比例还原的电动方程式赛车。

这台独特的“垃圾艺术车”一路“驶向”了第二十六届联合国气候变化大会(COP26)世界领导人峰会现场。原本步履匆匆的多国元首和国际媒体纷纷驻足观看,向全世界传递了“反塑”的重要性。去年,这台象征着循环经济奇迹的艺术赛车还受邀现身上海世界设计之都大会(WDCC),在黄浦江畔展现了设计与再生的无限潜力。

Envision Racing unveils Sundarbans Restoration Project logo to feature on race car

Envision Energy conducts national logo contest in India with the winner featuring on Envision Racing car and branded assets.

The logo represents the Sundarbans Restoration Project, a collaboration between Envision Energy India, Envision Racing and EARTHDAY.ORG, supporting the plantation of 500,000 mangrove saplings in the Sundarbans region.

 

London, UK [9AM, 22 APRIL]: Envision Racing is displaying a new logo on its car for the remainder of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship Season 12 and Season 13 to bring awareness to a major initiative that is aiming to plant over 500,000 trees in the Sundarbans region.
A competition, launched in partnership with Envision Energy India and the International Advertising Association, invited designers, students, and agencies to create a visual identity representing the restoration of the Sundarbans – one of the world’s most vital mangrove ecosystems.
The winning design, created by Ms Shibani Gharai, a freelance designer based in Mumbai, was selected from over 100 nominations submitted to the International Advertising Association.
It was selected for its creativity, cultural relevance, and environmental symbolism. The logo will now be proudly displayed on the Envision Racing Formula E car at the upcoming Berlin E-Prix, bringing global visibility to the Sundarbans restoration effort to over 560 million TV viewers and 422 million fans.
“My sincere gratitude to the respected jury members for selecting my work and recognising the thought behind the design,” said Ms Shibani Gharai. “While working on logo design for the project, I explored different directions inspired by mangroves, their roots, the wildlife around them and the idea of balance. When creativity meets purpose, it has the power to grow forests.”
The Sundarbans Restoration Project is an initiative created by Envision Energy India, Envision Racing and EARTHDAY.ORG to restore degraded areas of the Sundarbans Mangrove Forest in West Bengal, India while helping communities living on the frontlines of the climate crisis. Under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) mandate, this major mangrove sapling plantation drive will improve the living standards of 18,000 women and 10,000 families over a five-year programme through targeted health, nutrition, sanitation, and education initiatives.

The new logo featured on the race will bring global attention to this initiative of restoring Sundarbans mangroves.”

Envision Racing is growing awareness of the project and driving fans to make pledges through its Sustainable Chain programme, which has already supported the planting of more than 250,000 mangrove trees in Madagascar.
Through the Sustainable Chain, fans are invited to make a personal pledge to reduce their carbon footprint – such as reducing single-use plastics, choosing more sustainable travel, or lowering household energy consumption – and invite others to do the same.
The programme focuses on the power of collective action to create meaningful change. Participants who join the Sustainable Chain receive updates on the restoration projects and environmental impact generated through the programme, alongside exclusive content from the team throughout the season.
The initiative reflects Envision Racing’s wider commitment to using its platform in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship to promote climate awareness and support tangible environmental action.
Located across India and Bangladesh, the Sundarbans is the world’s largest mangrove forest and one of the region’s most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, including rising sea levels, coastal erosion and increasingly severe storms and cyclones. Local communities are suffering through reduced access to freshwater sources, nutrition, and sanitation, as well as access to schools and employment.
The Sundarbans Restoration Project will play a critical role in protecting coastal communities and capturing carbon. Mangroves can store up to four times more carbon than terrestrial forests while also providing natural protection against the effects of climate change. Mangrove planting also provides an economic opportunity, stabilising incomes particularly for widows facing extreme economic and social vulnerability.

Envision Racing publishes Season 11 Impact Report after hosting its largest-ever global programme of climate action events

Silverstone, UK – 13/01/26 – Envision Racing has announced the publication of its Season 11 Impact Report, capturing a landmark year in the FIA Formula E World Championship that combined competitive racing with global leadership on sustainability, innovation and climate action.

The report details how Envision Racing continued to push the limits of electric racing performance while using the championship’s global platform to drive meaningful environmental and social impact through its Race Against Climate Change (RACC) programme.

On track, Season 11 marked the debut of the GEN3 EVO, the most efficient single-seater racing car ever built, alongside the introduction of Pit Boost, a breakthrough ultra-fast charging technology that added a new strategic dimension to Formula E racing and highlighted race-to-road EV innovation.

Off track, Envision Racing delivered an extensive programme of climate advocacy, education and collaboration, hosting a record number of RACC events across Europe, Asia and the United States. These events engaged industry leaders, governments, students and communities in discussions on circularity, clean technology and sustainable mobility.

Initiatives ranged from university-led STEM engagement in Atlanta to e-waste innovation showcases in India, circularity discussions in the Netherlands, and thought leadership panels at global forums including COP29 and London Climate Action Week.

The Impact Report also highlights a year of external recognition for the team’s sustainability work, including multiple award shortlists for various sustainability campaigns and industry recognition for fan engagement and community initiatives.

Season 11 also saw the formation of Envision Racing’s Sustainability Advisory Board, bringing together global experts from various industries on the front lines of the climate crisis. How we calculate carbon savings in our pledge programme

How we calculate carbon savings

The carbon savings presented across our pledges in the Sustainable Chain programme are based on UK Government greenhouse gas conversion factors, alongside the HM Treasury Green Book appraisal framework and widely used industry carbon calculators and academic methodologies.

All figures are expressed in kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent (kgCO₂e), which is the standard unit for measuring greenhouse gas emissions and includes carbon dioxide and other gases adjusted for their climate impact.

 

Methodology

Carbon savings are calculated using a consistent approach:

Carbon saving = baseline activity emissions – low-carbon alternative emissions

Where possible, emissions factors are taken from:

  • UK Government DESNZ/DEFRA conversion factors
  • Transport and energy datasets aligned with national reporting standards (GOV.UK)

 

These factors provide kgCO₂e per unit of activity (e.g. per kilometre travelled, per kWh of electricity etc), ensuring consistency with national carbon accounting.

 

Annual and lifetime savings

Each pledge generates an annual saving based on the behaviour change made. To reflect the long-term impact of a sustained pledge, we also calculate a lifetime saving using HM Treasury Green Book guidance, which is the UK Government’s standard framework for appraising policy and programme impacts.

Under the Green Book, behavioural and administrative changes are assigned a lifetime horizon of 10 years. This is the most defensible UK Government-aligned assumption for individual pledge commitments, and reflects the approach used in public sector carbon appraisal.

Annual saving: the emissions avoided in a single year by making this behaviour change.

Lifetime saving (10 years): the cumulative emissions avoided if the pledge is sustained, calculated as annual saving × 10.

 

How we reach 8 million tonnes

Our target of 8 million tonnes CO₂e avoided is calculated as follows:

  • Average annual saving per pledge across five categories: 1,120 kgCO₂e
  • Lifetime saving per pledge (10 years): 11,200 kgCO₂e
  • Average number of pledges per person: 2.5
  • Lifetime saving per pledger: 11,200 × 2.5 = 28,000 kgCO₂e (28 tCO₂e)
  • Target pledgers: 300,000
  • Total lifetime impact: 300,000 × 28 = 8,400,000 tCO₂e

We have set a headline commitment of 8 million tonnes as a robust, rounded target grounded in this methodology.

 

Assumptions by pledge

 

#1. Recycling

Annual saving: ~200 kgCO₂e per year

Lifetime saving (10 years): ~2,000 kgCO₂e

Assumptions:

  • Based on a typical UK household recycling mixed materials (paper, plastic, glass, metals)
  • Savings come from avoided ‘virgin’ material production, which is significantly more carbon-intensive than recycling
  • Savings vary significantly depending on material type (e.g. aluminium vs plastic), so this figure represents a conservative blended annual estimate

  • UK conversion factors include emissions from waste disposal vs recycling pathways (GOV.UK)
  • Recycling reduces lifecycle emissions by avoiding extraction, processing, and manufacturing of raw materials

 

#2. Commute via public transport

Annual saving: ~900 kgCO₂e per year

Lifetime saving (10 years): ~9,000 kgCO₂e

Assumptions:

  • Daily commute: ~30 km round trip
  • 5 days/week, ~48 weeks/year (~7,200 km annually)
  • Switching from petrol car to train or public transport

 

Emissions factors:

  • Petrol car: ~0.16 kgCO₂e/km
  • Train: ~0.035 kgCO₂e/km

 

Calculation:

  • Baseline (car): ~1,150 kgCO₂e/year
  • Alternative (train): ~250 kgCO₂e/year
  • Annual saving ≈ 900 kgCO₂e

 

Cars emit several times more CO₂ per passenger kilometre than rail, making commuting behaviour a major emissions driver.

 

#3. Switching to an electric vehicle (EV)

Annual saving: ~1,200 kgCO₂e per year

Lifetime saving (10 years): ~12,000 kgCO₂e

Assumptions:

  • Annual mileage: ~10,000 km
  • Comparison: petrol vehicle vs battery electric vehicle (UK electricity mix)

 

Emissions factors:

  • Petrol car: ~0.16 kgCO₂e/km
  • EV: ~0.04 kgCO₂e/km

 

Calculation:

  • Petrol: ~1,600 kgCO₂e/year
  • EV: ~400 kgCO₂e/year
  • Annual saving ≈ 1,200 kgCO₂e

 

This includes operational emissions only. Manufacturing emissions are excluded, consistent with most annual footprint calculations.

 

#4. Switching to a renewable energy tariff

Annual saving: ~1,500 kgCO₂e per year

Lifetime saving (10 years): ~15,000 kgCO₂e

Assumptions:

  • Average UK household electricity consumption
  • Switching from grid-average electricity to 100% renewable tariff

 

Sources:

  • UK grid electricity includes fossil fuel generation
  • Renewable tariffs significantly reduce associated emissions per kWh
  • Carbon calculators and UK datasets show savings of ~500–1,500 kgCO₂e/year, depending on household usage

 

Actual savings depend on household energy consumption and supplier sourcing and certification model.

 

#5. Skipping one long-haul flight

Annual saving: ~1,800 kgCO₂e per flight avoided

Lifetime saving (10 years): ~18,000 kgCO₂e

Assumptions:

  • Return long-haul flight (e.g. UK to North America)
  • Economy class

 

Emissions factors:

  • Long-haul flight: ~0.11–0.15 kgCO₂e per passenger-km

 

Typical outcome:

  • Long-haul return flight ≈ 1,500–2,000 kgCO₂e

 

Flight emissions vary based on distance, aircraft type and seating class (premium seats have a higher per-passenger impact). The lifetime figure assumes one long-haul flight avoided per year for 10 years.

  1. Consistency over precision

For comparability, all pledges are calculated using the same emissions datasets and the same annualised approach. This ensures consistency across actions, even where exact real-world values may differ.

 

  1. Lifetime horizon

The 10-year lifetime figure is applied consistently across all pledges, in line with HM Treasury Green Book guidance for behavioural interventions. This is deliberately conservative: a pledge sustained for longer would generate proportionally greater savings.

 

Why this approach is credible

We’ve chosen to use UK Government-backed emissions factors (DEFRA/DESNZ) and the HM Treasury Green Book appraisal framework. This aligns with national greenhouse gas accounting standards, and reflects the methodology used in corporate carbon reporting, sustainability disclosures, and carbon footprint calculators. The Green Book is the same framework used by the UK public sector to appraise the long-term impact of policy interventions — applying it to individual pledges ensures our target is held to the same standard of rigour.

 

Summary

These pledges represent practical, evidence-based actions individuals can take to reduce their carbon footprint, with savings calculated using recognised UK methodologies and conservative assumptions.

While individual results may vary, the figures provide a robust and credible benchmark for understanding real-world climate impact. Our 8 million tonne target is built from the bottom up — pledge by pledge — using the same emissions factors that underpin UK corporate carbon reporting.

Climate change can feel abstract, so we’ve focused on what people can control: everyday decisions. These figures turn those choices into measurable impact, using consistent and credible data to show how small actions can add up to meaningful carbon savings.
