Fans across the world help team pass 250,000 sustainability pledges!

Envision Racing, the world champion Formula E race team, is delighted to confirm it has successfully passed the milestone of over 250,000 climate positive pledges submitted as part of the Race Against Climate Change™ (RACC) initiative. 

The current team world champions in Formula E, Formula 1’s electric counterpart, Envision Racing is planting a mangrove tree in Madagascar – through its tree planting partner Earthly and Eden Reforestation Projects – for every pledge made.

Envision Racing, known as the ‘greenest team on the greenest grid’, launched the consumer-facing part of RACC, called the Sustainable Chain, to empower its fans and their communities to make green pledges and drive climate action in the wake of the UN’s COP26 climate conference in Glasgow. 

Partnering with actor, activist and UN Ambassador Aidan Gallagher, the team’s aim is to reach a total of one million pledges.

To date, there have been both 250,000 pledges and planted trees.

In total, fans’ actions have saved over 48 million kilograms of dangerous carbon dioxide emissions from entering the atmosphere. 

In 2023, the team added a new e-waste pledge to its platform – following the launch of its ground-breaking Recover E project.

The award-winning initiative, which say the team collaborate with artist Liam ‘Lazerian’ Hopkins on a full-size, functioning replica of the Formula E Gen3 car made entirely out of discarded electronic waste, was designed to inspire youngsters to reconsider their relationship with electronics, and look at ways to ensure items are not thrown away but instead recycled, re-used or repurposed.

The UN has described e-waste as the world’s “next growing threat to the environment”: to date the team’s e-waste pledge has been taken over 50,000 times, making it one of the most popular on offer.

The Sustainable Chain campaign tasks fans with taking one of 12 pledges to help save the planet.

Via Envision Racing’s website, fans calculate their carbon footprint and then watch it diminish as they introduce green lifestyle changes. These include:  

  • Swapping to an electric vehicle 
  • Commuting by bike or public transport to work 
  • Sourcing local food 
  • Switching to a renewable energy supplier 
  • Making energy efficiency improvements at home 
  • Flying less 
  • Installing solar panels 
  • Reducing meat consumption 
  • Cutting down on water usage and producing less waste
  • Recycling e-waste

After submitting some data about their current habits in each area, fans can see clearly exactly the impact they could have by making even some very minor changes to their lifestyle.

“We have ambitious plans for the future of the Sustainable Chain campaign, with new celebrity ambassadors and media partners lined up to help us reach our target of one million climate pledges,” Sylvain Filippi, Managing Director of Envision Racing, said last year. 

“At Envision Racing, we exist to energise the Race Against Climate Change, by creating experiences that accelerate the transition to clean, secure and affordable renewable energy. On and off the track, we raise awareness of the benefits of electric vehicles, but we also work to connect our fans with environmental issues and provide them with information on tangible actions that can drive real change. 

“While the impact of this campaign is focused on enabling our fans and wider audiences to reduce their environmental footprint, it is closely aligned with our overarching aspiration for Envision Racing to be ‘the greenest team on the greenest grid’ and our efforts to reduce the environmental impact of our operations and maintain our carbon neutral status.” 

Having become the first Formula E team to finish on the podium 50 times during January’s Diriyah E-Prix, Envision Racing was also the first team in Formula E to be certified carbon neutral by the Carbon Trust back in 2020.

It is one of a handful of teams to have achieved three-star sustainability accreditation from motorsport’s global governing body, the FIA – an accreditation that was recently confirmed as having been successfully renewed.

The status recognises that the team retains the highest level of commitment to the environmental and sustainability goals set out by the governing body.

At COP28 last year, the team was the only sporting organisation to feature within the global summit’s ‘Blue Zone’, exhibiting its RACC initiatives to world leaders and industry titans.

Envision Racing become first team to achieve 50 podiums in Formula E!

Robin Frijns’ second place finish in Diriyah on Saturday evening was a record-breaking one in Formula E, as Envision Racing became the first team in the sport to achieve 50 podium finishes.

Ever-present since the all-electric series debutted – albeit in various names and guises – Frijns’ assured run to the podium in the second of two races at Diriyah this week ensured the Silverstone outfit became the first team in history to bring up the half-century of finishes.

Fifty podiums in just 119 races is a testament to the dedication, hard work and expertise of all those involved with the team – the current world champions after emerging victorious at the end of Season 9.


A number of members of the team, including Managing Director & CTO Sylvain Filippi, have been involved from the very start.

“Very special indeed,” Filippi wrote on Twitter. “So proud of this team.” 

Frijns’ podium-finish also kept the Green Machine’s finish streak alive; you have to go back to last year’s Indonesian E-Prix at the start of June to find the last time the team has not finished in the top-three at least once at a race meeting.

Envision Racing have become the first Formula E team to have an official WhatsApp Channel.

The channel, which has been running since the opening race of Season 10 of Formula E, provides fans with a new and convenient way to receive updates about the team – both on the track and off it.

With exclusive content involving both drivers, especially over race weekends, it serves as another way for the team’s worldwide supporter base to connect with what’s going on.

Recover E wins ‘Most Inspiring Campaign’ at Race Media Awards

Envision Racing’s ground-breaking Recover E project has won the award for ‘Most Inspiring Campaign’ at the 2024 Race Media Awards.

The Race Media Awards shines a spotlight on the very best of the motorsport industry, with Recover E beating out competition from across Formula 1 and other disciplines to be named the winner.

The team came up with the Recover E campaign to raise awareness about electronic waste (‘e-waste’) – identified by the UN World Health Organisation as the “next growing threat to the environment” – in a way that also underlined the importance of recycling appropriately and encouraged all to re-think the ways they can contribute towards a more sustainable, circular economy.

The Formula E world champions partnered with artist Liam ‘Lazerian’ Hopkins to build the world’s first fully electric and drivable formula race car constructed entirely from e-waste.

The visionary endeavour not only sparks excitement on the track but also shines a spotlight on the staggering global issue of e-waste.

The one-of-a-kind car was officially launched live on flagship BBC programme ‘The One Show’, earning further international coverage and interest too.

The environmentally conscious race car is a testament to innovation, seamlessly integrating donated electronic relics donated by school children and young people. Tens of thousands of iPhones, chargers, laptops, cables, game consoles, batteries, and even single-use vapes dance harmoniously to form the very sinews of this remarkable machine, in a bid to raise awareness about the dire need for recycling and repurposing our digital relics.

Alongside the functioning racing car, which was unveiled to worldwide media at the London E-Prix in July, the team also ran a competition for youngsters aged 8-21 to design their own model car made out of their disused electronics.

The competition was run in partnership with Cartoon Network, with winners from the United Kingdom, Mexico and the Philippines eventually identified.

The team also launched a special e-waste pledge on its website – bringing the total number of pledges in the ‘Sustainable Chain’ initiative up to 12. To date, over 50,000 individuals having already made a commitment to reduce their e-waste.

British fashion brand Superdry announced as new official partner

Collaborating to ‘drive sustainability in style’ working to increase engagement with sustainable actions amongst fashion and motorsport audiences. 

Envision Racing is delighted to announce a multi-year partnership with British fashion brand, Superdry, beginning from Season 10 of the FIA Formula E World Championship.

Superdry will supply the World Champions team kit with a 10-piece exclusive capsule range of high-performance products.

The two brands will collaborate on their shared missions around sustainability, leveraging the unique opportunity to showcase that more considered choices can be both fashionable and an aspirational statement of intent.

Superdry is built on the spirit of adventure; gaining global recognition and popularity since its inception in 2003. Now on a journey to transform the world of fashion, they’re working to minimise their environmental impact, guided by a desire to safeguard the environment for the future.

By partnering with Envision Racing, Superdry are putting a stake in the ground, and committing to make fashion a statement for good, in a partnership that will allow both brands to collaborate and learn from each other, whilst driving impactful change within their respective fields.

The kit created by Superdry includes product made from sustainable materials, including Organic Cotton shirts that preserves soil and reduces water consumption.

The kit will be worn by the Envision Racing team as they set out to defend their Formula E World Championship title.

In addition, Envision Racing and Superdry will continue to create and inspire change together as they join forces in the Race Against Climate Change™ – the movement that represents Envision Racing’s mission to accelerate the transition to clean, secure and affordable renewable energy.

Together, they will work on collaborative marketing campaigns to inspire, excite and encourage audiences to adopt more sustainable fashion choices.

Envision Racing takes the lead on sporting climate action at COP28 

It’s a wrap! COP28 in Dubai has concluded with an agreement for the world to transition away from fossil fuels.

Although we are among many concerned about the loopholes in the climate conference’s final text, the Envision Racing team remains hopeful that this represents a transformative moment in human history – heralding a new age of renewable energy.  

For our team in Dubai, it’s been an incredibly busy and productive 12 days. For a start, we were the only sports team in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s Blue Zone, the formal conference space where heads of state negotiate.  

To this powerful select audience, we showcased our pioneering Recover E car. The world’s first full-sized, driveable Formula E car, it is made entirely of electronic waste – including disposable vapes, mobile phones, laptops, MP3 players, plugs and batteries.

It exists to sound the alarm about the rising environmental challenge of e-waste, which is on track to reach 75 million tonnes globally by 2030.

On COP28’s Transport Day, 6th of December, we hosted the UK Secretary of State for Transport Mark Harper at our exhibit – which also contained a Formula E racing simulator.

We wanted to demonstrate to him – and all other influential politicians – the power of electric racing and the ability of sport to inspire mass behaviour change.  

Another highlight of our COP28 experience was the launch of our trailblazing partnership with Professor Ed Hawkins, the University of Reading climate scientist who came up with the idea of visually representing rising global temperatures through a series of stripes turning from blue to red. From next season, we will display these iconic ‘warming stripes’ on our racing cars.  

We took part in numerous panel discussions to underline sport’s unique power to galvanise public action on mitigating the worst of the climate crisis. In the Blue Zone, this included our racing driver Alice Powell talking at the UN’s Sports for Climate Action event.

She also took part in a discussion on the ability of Formula E to innovate electric mobility technology in the Green Zone – where youth representatives, artists, businesses, regional and local decision-makers and other civil society actors share climate solutions. She explained how the battery technology being developed for electric motorsport has the potential to accelerate the transition to all forms of e-mobility.  

Most of all, we’re most proud that we did not shy away from standing up for our purpose and beliefs as a sports organisation. As world leaders hotly debated the final wording of the final conference text, we were one of only two sporting entities to sign the Global Optimism letter – calling for it to explicitly commit to a phaseout of fossil fuels in line with the science and a 1.5°C trajectory.  

While the outcome might not have exactly lived up to our hopes – we will now only double down on our efforts to accelerate the mass adoption of renewable energy and e-mobility.

We can and must do this, because one thing is certain.

The future is electric.

Our world-championship winning car has one major new addition for Season 10 – Professor Ed Hawkins’ world-famous Climate Stripes.

The stripes, which visually depict the way the world has got warmer over the last 150 years, will feature on both the front and back wings of our iconic green car for 2024, raising awareness about global warming and the importance of addressing climate change at every round of the championship.

Sebastien Buemi and Robin Frijns will race for us in 2024, looking to defend the teams’ crown won in such dramatic circumstances in Season 9.

FIA Formula E World Champions Envision Racing is proud to announce an exciting partnership with acclaimed climate scientist Professor Ed Hawkins.

This groundbreaking collaboration will see Hawkins’ renowned Climate Stripes featured on Envision Racing’s high-performance electric race car and the team’s kit, symbolising a commitment to environmental sustainability and raising awareness of the fight against climate change.

Launching on youth day at COP 28 (December 8th), the stripes will first appear on the car during the opening race of season 10, which kicks off in Mexico City on Saturday 13 January 2024.

Ed Hawkins, a professor at the University of Reading and a leading figure in climate science, is renowned for his creation of the Climate Stripes, which represent the historical temperature changes of countries across the world. First created in 2018, the stripes aim to visually highlight the alarming trend of global warming in one striking image.

Launching in Blue Zone at COP28, with an exclusive new film, narrated by Professor Hawkins, Envision Racing will showcase the stripes to raise awareness and inspire fans, partners, and competitors, to collaborate on addressing the urgent climate crisis.

In addition to featuring the global warming stripes on the car, the stripes will be integrated into the team’s Race Against Climate Change programme and also involve international and regional activities taking place throughout the Formula E season to showcase changes that have occurred at race locations using local warming stripes.

This includes International ‘Show Your Stripes’ Day on 21st June 2024.

Envision Racing exists to inspire generations to tackle climate change and support the transition to e-mobility and renewable energy. On and off the track, the team focus on accelerating change that benefits people and planet.

Envision launched its award-winning Race Against Climate Change fan pledge program in Glasgow in 2021. The campaign encourages fans to make personal commitments reduce their carbon impact, from reducing waste and sourcing food locally to switching to renewable energy and recycling e-waste.

To date, nearly 250,000 pledges have been made.
