SUNDARBANS
RESTORATION
Restoring the Indian Sundarbans region one tree at a time.
In partnership with Envision Energy India, Envision Racing is supporting this initiative supports the restoration of vital mangrove ecosystems across the Indian Sundarbans – the world’s largest mangrove forest and one of the planet’s most important natural climate defences.
By rebuilding mangrove cover in this climate-vulnerable region, the programme strengthens coastal protection, captures and stores carbon, safeguards biodiversity, and creates sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities. It represents a practical, measurable approach to climate action – combining clean energy leadership with nature-based solutions on the ground.

NATURE’S SHIELD. HUMANITY’S LIFELINE.
WHY do MANGROVES MATTER
Mangroves are salt-tolerant coastal forests found in tropical and subtropical regions. They thrive where few other plants can survive – in tidal mudflats, estuaries, and saline soils. But they are far more than coastal trees:
- Store 3–4x more carbon per hectare than tropical rainforests
- Protect communities from cyclones, erosion, and rising seas
- Provide nursery grounds for fish and marine life
- Sustain livelihoods through fisheries, honey, eco-tourism & forestry
Globally, mangroves cover 14–15 million hectares across 123 countries – and up to 35% have been lost since 1980 due to development, aquaculture, pollution, and climate change.

The World’s Largest Mangrove Forest
The Sundarbans: A Global MISSION
The Sundarbans, a UNESCO World Heritage Site spanning India and Bangladesh, is the world’s largest mangrove forest. This programme focuses on the Indian Sundarbans – a critical delta ecosystem protecting millions of people.
Home to over 35 mangrove species, as well as the Royal Bengal tiger, Irrawaddy dolphin and Estuarine crocodile, it serves as a natural bio-shield – reducing storm surges, stabilising coastlines, and protecting freshwater sources.
But rising sea levels, intensifying cyclones and human pressures threaten its future. Without intervention, up to 75% could be lost by 2100 if global warming exceeds 2°C.

A Nature-Based Climate Solution
The Solution: Mangrove Restoration
Restoring mangroves in the Sundarbans delivers measurable environmental and social impact:
Climate Action: Among the world’s most effective natural carbon sinks, mangroves capture and store significant carbon.
Coastal Protection: They reduce storm surges, stabilise coastlines, and protect vulnerable embankments.
Biodiversity: Restored habitats support marine nurseries and endangered species.
Water Security: Mangroves help regulate salinity and safeguard freshwater systems.
Community Impact: Restoration supports local livelihoods, with women playing a key role in nursery management, planting, and long-term ecosystem stewardship.

RESTORING ECOSYSTEMS & OPPORTUNITY
Community & Livelihood Impact
Mangrove restoration is more than environmental action – it strengthens local economies and community resilience.
The programme creates jobs in nursery management, planting, and ecosystem stewardship, offering safer alternatives to high-risk forest work exposed to wildlife and tidal hazards.
It also prioritises women’s employment – including widows of tiger attack victims – providing income, skills, and leadership opportunities.
By strengthening household incomes, the programme helps families keep children in school, reducing pressure for child labour and supporting better education outcomes for the next generation.
Climate resilience, rooted in dignity and inclusion.

A Nature-Based Climate Solution
Alignment with Global Goals
The programme advances climate resilience, biodiversity protection, poverty reduction, gender equality, clean water security, and sustainable economic growth.
Mangrove restoration in the Sundarbans delivers integrated environmental and social impact in a single, scalable intervention.
JOIN THE MOVEMENT
With Envision Energy India leading on-the-ground implementation, this project represents scalable, science-backed climate action in one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable regions.
Through the Envision Racing’s Sustainable Chain Programme, fans, partners and supporters can turn commitment into measurable impact – helping expand mangrove restoration across the Sundarbans while supporting resilient livelihoods for local communities.
