Envision Racing received the Climate Champion award at the Formula E end-of-season gala in London on Sunday.
The team was recognised for its groundbreaking Recover E project, which saw the team create a functioning, full-size replica of a GEN3 Formula E car made entirely of e-waste, raising awareness of the growing problem.The car – which was supported by worldwide design competition for schoolchildren – gained worldwide attention, and has gone on to be displayed at COP28 and the World Economic Forum.
After being launched on BBC’s The One Show in 2023, the car – designed by Manchester-based artist Liam ‘Lazerian’ Hopkins – has gained worldwide media attention, from outlets including Forbes, CNN and ITV.
The award, open to all Formula E teams, was judged based on the extent teams had clearly demonstrated the ambition and innovation of the team’s role in creating credible impact on furthering climate action and the legacy potential to inspire or drive change within the sector.
E-waste is considered by the UN to be the world’s next growing climate issue. To date, over 50,000 fans have taken an e-waste pledge on the team’s website – promising to improve their relationship with electronic items and the ways they dispose of them.
E-waste also forms the cornerstone of the team’s partnership with Cartoon Network. In 2024, the two entities combined to launch a special ‘Climate E-Racers’ game on Roblox, which enables children of all ages to race against each other while also learning about e-waste and what they can do to limit its impact.
To date over one million players have had a go at the game, completing more than 500,000 climate challenges in the process.
